Special Screening: THE CONFORMIST 1970

Wednesday, January 29, 2014, 7 pm

Film Streams and Opera Omaha will present a one-time screening of THE CONFORMIST followed by a discussion with James Darrah, director of Opera Omaha’s upcoming “Agrippina,” and Mauro Fiore, the Omaha-based, Academy Award-winning cinematographer of AVATAR.

Among other topics, Darrah will talk about how the film influenced the set and costume design of the Opera Omaha production of “Agrippina” (February 14 & 16), and Fiore will discuss the film’s influence on his illustrious work. Bernardo Bertolucci’s THE CONFORMIST is considered one of the most visually stunning of all films. Said Michael Atkinson of The Village Voice: “The actors vogue, Vittorio Storaro’s lens makes every street and room baroque, the Roman streets burn with gaslight, the dancehall bursts, the unforgettable Alpine roads lead to death and catastrophe." The post-film exchange promises to be an engaging discussion with and between two distinguished artists who draw visual inspiration from the film.

Hailed as one of the great films of the 1970s, THE CONFORMIST is a forebear of the auteur invasion of the American mainstream typified by directors like Coppola and Scorsese. As fascism is sweeping Italy in the late 1930s, a desperate man wracked by childhood trauma is willing to do anything to achieve normalcy. The depths of his desperation for acceptance are tested when he is tasked with the assassination of his former mentor, an anti-fascist professor in exile, while on honeymoon.
