In Pedro Almodóvar’s 1988, neon-hued comedy, WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, our heroine Pepa is having a rough day. Having just found out that her longtime lover, Ivan, is breaking things off, she plans her own death. But her suicide is continuously interrupted by a parade of harried characters, all somehow linked to Ivan. High camp and zany antics combine to make this one of Almodóvar’s most beloved films.

Opera singer John Moore will perform an aria from “The Barber of Seville” before the screening. Post-film discussion with opera director Michael Shell and Spanish film scholar Dr. Steven Torres will be moderated by Opera Omaha General Director Roger Weitz. When creating the concept for Opera Omaha’s October 2015 production of Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” director Michael Shell drew inspiration from WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. Torres, a faculty member of UNO’s Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS), has written on the work of Almodóvar.
