Tim’s Vermeer

Dir. Teller USA 80 min PG-13

2013 Sony Pictures Classics

English

Most people knew Tim Jenison as the Texas-based inventor of computer programs that helped pave the way for computer-based film editing. However, he harbored an obsession with 17th century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer. Though not a trained artist, Tim set about reconstructing Vermeer’s incredibly realistic paintings — a style that could be called photo realistic had photography existed in the 1600s. Tim’s journey leads him on a pilgrimage to meet contemporary photo realist David Hockney and to the village in Holland where Vermeer lived and worked. Directed by Teller of the illusionist duo Penn and Teller, this film explores the intersection of technology and art.

“Tim’s Vermeer works at capturing on film how artists work their miracles. And it will have you, long after the credits fade, puzzling out questions of invention, creativity, science, talent, painstaking craft, and the magic that comes of putting all that together.” — Bob Mondelo
