The Master

Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson USA 137 min R

2012 The Weinstein Company

English

The latest film from Paul Thomas Anderson, Oscar-nominated writer-director of THERE WILL BE BLOOD, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, MAGNOLIA, BOOGIE NIGHTS, and HARD EIGHT.

In the years after WWII, an American intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) creates a religion. When he meets a troubled drifter (Joaquin Phoenix), he invites the man to help him spread the new faith. As their congregation increases, the drifter begins to question the religion he once accepted and the mentor who gave his life direction.

“Altogether amazing… It is a movie about the lure and folly of greatness that comes as close as anything I’ve seen recently to being a great movie. There will be skeptics, but the cult is already forming. Count me in.” (A.O. Scott, The New York Times)

“Written, directed, acted, shot, edited and scored with a bracing vibrancy that restores your faith in film as an art form, THE MASTER is nirvana for movie lovers. Anderson mixes sounds and images into a dark, dazzling music that is all his own.” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone)
