Pete, a lowly fisherman on the Isle of Man, is deemed unworthy by the father of the girl he wants to marry. He sets off to make good in the world, trusting his best friend, the lawyer Philip, to watch after his love. However, with Pete gone, the two people he cares about most start to fall for each other.

“Hitchcock teases the audience, and torments his characters, with a game of hide-and-seek. Someone always knows something that someone else doesn’t: occasionally it’s the audience who is in the dark. The clandestine affair here becomes the bomb under the table from Hitchcock’s famous definition of suspense. The question is: when it will be discovered and how much damage will it do?” — Pamela Hutchinson and Tony Paley in The Guardian
