The American Nurse

Dir. Carolyn Jones 81 min Not Rated

2014

Presented in collaboration with Center for Health Partnerships at Nebraska Methodist College, this special screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

This film is a product of the American Nurse Project, which aims to elevate the voice of nurses in this country by capturing their personal stories through photography and film. Director Carolyn Jones and her team followed five nurses from varying fields that demonstrate how we rely on these professionals to deal with some of our most pressing issues: Tonia Faust works with maximum-security prison inmates; Jason Short with home health patients in Appalachia; Brian McMillion with soldiers returning from war; Naomi Cross with mothers giving birth; and Sister Stephen with nursing home patients at the end of life.

After the film, a panel will focus on the changing scope of practice for nurses, the state regulations in Nebraska that shape the scope of practice, the effects of the Affordable Care Act, and more. The discussion will be moderated by Marilyn Valerio, Ph.D., RN; Dean Emerita, Nebraska Methodist College. The panel will be composed of Kathy Hoebelheinrich, APRN-NP, Diabetes Case Manager, Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department; Pat Lopez, RN, Policy Chair, Public Health Association of Nebraska; and Rosanna Morris, RN, Clinical Enterprise Chief Nursing Officer & Chief Operating Officer, Nebraska Medical Center.
