Medora

Filmmaker Davy Rothbart joins us for a special screening of his documentary MEDORA. A Q&A session with Rothbart will follow.

Filmed over a year, MEDORA is an underdog story from the heart of basketball country and a record of Midwestern decay. As the Medora (Indiana) High School basketball team struggles to win even a single game, their off-court challenges include family strife, run-ins with the law, academic failures, and the knowledge that little opportunity awaits them in their small, blighted town. Natives of Ann Arbor, Mich., Rothbart and co-director Andrew Cohn have created an empathic portrait of not only the young athletes, but also a troubled region and an increasingly rare way of life.

Davy Rothbart is the creator and editor of FOUND Magazine, a frequent contributor to public radio’s “This American Life,” and the author of My Heart is an Idiot, a book of personal essays, and The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas, a collection of stories. Rothbart’s work also appears in GQ, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Grantland, among other publications. He’s directed two documentaries about the punk rock band Rise Against, videos for Dan Savage’s It Gets Better Project, and two other documentaries now in post-production.
